At 12 billion a year, the revenues of the porn industry in
the U.S. have become larger than the NFL, NBA and Major
League Baseball combined. Worldwide porn sales are reported
to be 57 billion dollars, with 12 billion deriving from the
United States alone. To put this in perspective, Microsoft,
who sells the operating system used on the majority of the
computers in the world (in addition to other software),
reported sales of 36.8 billion in 2004. With that being
said, the Adult Industry is the largest industry in the
world with money waiting to be made by all.
According to the Justice Department, in 1998 there were
28,000 X-rated Web sites generating 925 million dollars in
revenue. Within just three years this number increased to
280,000 X-rated Web sites. Approximately 77% of online
visitors to adult content sites are male with an average age
of 41 and an average income of $60,000 a year.
Hollywood currently releases 11,000 adult movies per
year, more than 20 times the mainstream movie production.
The adult video industry alone is a 20 billion dollar
industry. An estimated 12,000 adults are employed by the
porn industry in California alone. In taxes alone the porn
industry in California pays over 36 million dollars yearly.
